Greg Gumbel, the legendary CBS Sports anchor and commentator, has passed away at the age of 78. His family shared the heartbreaking news in a statement on Friday: *“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg faced his illness with the same stoicism, grace, and positivity that defined his remarkable life.* *He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration, and over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcasting industry. His iconic voice and unparalleled dedication will never be forgotten. Greg’s memory will be forever cherished by his family, closest friends, colleagues, and all who loved him.”* — Marcy & Michelle Gumbel Gumbel was a trailblazing figure in sports broadcasting, serving as a play-by-play announcer and studio host for CBS Sports, with a distinguished career that also included years at NBC Sports. He won the hearts of fans across the nation with his coverage of events ranging from *The NFL Today* to Super Bowls and the Olympic Games. In 2022, he marked his 50th anniversary in broadcasting, cementing his status as one of the most respected voices in sports media.

Born on May 3, 1946, in New Orleans, Greg Gumbel was raised in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967. His younger brother, Bryant Gumbel, also became a celebrated figure in broadcasting as the host of NBC's Today show and HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
